This ‘Girls vs. Boys’ trope first gained significance in late 2018 though the exact year is unknown and prompted many subformats to rise from it including ‘Time Travel: Is Invented’. This specific subformat came into existence in July of 2020, but did not spread further until August of the same year. And, it commonly depicts what one group would do with a time machine vs. others. In the spirit of cozy seasons starting, our version of this subformat is our hot take on what folklorists do for fun at sleepovers vs. what theologists do. You often hear folklorists cracking jokes about summoning things from other worlds (and in some cases we know a few who have played with some Ouija boards for funsies). We imagine that if folklorists did do this Candyman style that this is how theologists at their own sleepovers would respond. Our meme of the week is a play on “Squidward Looking Out the Window,” a reaction image with origin in an episode of Spongebob Squarepants. In the episode, “That Sinking Feeling,” the character Squidward looks out his window down longingly on characters Ptrick and Spongebob frolicking outside enjoying each other’s company. This meme is used to convey jealousy or envy of others having fun while you’re stuck inside or otherwise unable to participate. In this case, the meme represents an ominous, patient waiting for the eventual participation in the events of the night to come. Bloody Mary is a kind of spirit summoning game, often evoked during sleepovers and other night time teen hangouts. Essentially, the game consists of a group of teens (usually young women) staring into a bathroom mirror, chanting a specific number of “Bloody Mary”’s (sometimes three times, sometimes thirteen) to summon Bloody Mary’s image, spirit, visage, into the mirror. Sometimes lights flicker or the sink runs. There are lots of dynamic traditions associated with the summoning of Bloody Mary.
